The Medicaid for Independent Young Adults (MIYA) program provides continued health coverage to young adults transitioning from foster care to independence. Youth leaving foster care after turning 18 may be eligible to continue receiving a medical card each month until they turn 21 years old. You may receive MIYA even if you choose not to participate in Aftercare.
The Medicaid (MIYA) card can help pay the cost of medication, health care, substance abuse treatment or mental health care.

Other Programs for Youth Aging Out
Medicaid Coverage for Youth Who Are:
- Living in Iowa
- Under age 21
- Who were in a foster care placement when they turned age 18
- Left foster care on or after May 1, 2006, and
- Have countable income under 200% of the Federal poverty level.
